Some of the most extraordinary moments at the Allan Houser Sculpture Garden also known as Haozous Place, happen long after the visitors have gone home.
Recently, we had the privilege of welcoming Santa Fe photographer Paul Horpedahl for an evening dedicated to capturing Allan Houser’s monumental sculptures beneath the brilliant New Mexico night sky. As darkness settled over Haozous Place, the Milky Way emerged overhead, creating a breathtaking backdrop for Houser’s timeless bronzes and stone sculptures.
There is something profoundly moving about experiencing these works under the stars. During the day, Allan Houser’s sculptures reveal their powerful forms through sunlight and shadow. At night, they take on an entirely different presence—quiet, contemplative, and almost celestial. Against the vastness of the universe, Houser’s figures seem to remind us of humanity’s enduring relationship with nature, spirit, and the cosmos.
