Allan Houser worked on paper and canvas throughout his entire career. His two-dimensional body of work includes charcoal drawings, paintings, sketches, lithographs, silkscreens, and illustrations created over more than five decades.
These works are not secondary to the sculpture. They are where ideas began. Figures such as the Apache Crown Dancer and scenes rooted in Chiricahua Apache life appear across the full range of media, and many compositions later evolved into three-dimensional form. Early works reflect his training at the Santa Fe Indian School. Later pieces show an artist working with increasing independence, refining line and composition on his own terms.
